Introduction – Ho’oulu ‘Āina
show transcriptPuni Jackson, Kalihi, Honolulu, Oʻahu, Hoʻoulu ʻĀina - Kōkua Kalihi Valley (KKV)
Over 40 years ago, Kōkua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive family services was formed by the Kalihi Valley community as a non profit corporation, in response to the absence of accessible and appropriate health care services for the valley’s Asian and Pacific Island immigrant population. They began with staff who did outreach connecting residents with their existing services such as medical and dental services. Community leaders envisioned a healthier Kalihi valley in which neighbors help to heal neighbors, and community members see themselves as part of a larger whole, connected to each other, to their culture and their shared land. 10 years ago, KKV acquired a 100 acre parcel of land in the back of Kalihi Valley, restoring it to health and productivity.
Next, Puni Jackson will speak on Ho'oulu 'Āina as a place where people strengthen connections between health of the land and health of the people.
