Hui Mālama Ola Nā ʻŌiwi is a private, non-profit organization originally formed as the Puna Community Caring Health System in collaboration with Alu Like in 1985. It began with Puna Hui Ohana’s concern about Native Hawaiians reluctance to seek medical care until it was too late. Hawaiian community leaders, health professionals, technicians, and educators responded to their need. In 1991, under the Native Hawaiian Health Care Improvement Act, Hui Mālama Ola Nā ʻŌiwi was recognized as the Hawaiian health entity serving the Big Island.
In the next video, you will hear stories from community health specialist, Aunty Edna Baldado. Soon after retiring from critical care as a registered nurse, she began working at Hui Malama. She provides health education in a way that empowers people to WANT to understand their health condition and seek medical services early so that it’s not too late.
