DOH Leeward in Waipahu
In the Leeward coast community, there is only one road going in and out. The people of Nānākuli asked: What can be done to help build capacity in the case of a disaster? The Department of Defense’s Innovative Readiness Training program brings National Guard personnel into local communities designed to give Guard members an opportunity to complete mission essential training while acting as good neighbors addressing community and civic needs. In 2012, CMART (Community-Based Medical All Hazards Readiness Training) was initiated by the Hawaii Air National Guard (HIANG) with their partners, the State Civil Defense, City and County Department of Emergency Management, the Department of Health, Public Health Nursing Branch, the Hawaii Medical Reserve Corp, the American Red Cross, and the Department of Education. The group came together to support the community in running their own shelter with their own partners.
In this next story we will meet Pastor Allen Cardines, Jr. of the Nānāikapono Protestant Church of Nānākuli as well as Colonel James Faumuina and Jason Iyomasa from the Hawaii Air National Guard. We will learn about how numerous agencies engaged with a community’s desire to be better prepared for disasters.
