LESSON 2.1

Action Area: Health as a Shared Value

Introduction – What Health Means to a Community

Josh Levinson @ Hoʻokuaʻāina, Maunawili, O‘ahu

What does health mean to you? Conditions in the world outside the boundaries of medical treatment - where we live, learn, work and play - are what most profoundly affect our health and wellness. A collaboration between Kōkua Kalihi Valley (KKV), Hawai‘i Public Health Institute, and Islander Institute hosted public discussions or as we say in Hawai‘i, “talk story sessions” on what health means to you and your community.

Imagine, a health system built around what matters most to us, not what’s the matter with us. The stories collected from communities across the islands would help to contribute to a shared view of health and wellness in Hawai‘i and begin to build a better health system.

In this next video, Josh Levinson with the Islander Institute and Hawai‘i Public Health Institute, provide an example of how they used talk story sessions to LISTEN and begin to understand what health means to communities across the islands that make health a shared value in Hawai‘i along with a sense community.
