Women make up half of the population of Hawaii with a third having received at least a Baccalaureate degree. However, a third of households in Hawaii are headed by a single woman.
Importantly, a fourth of households headed by single women are below the federal poverty level. In addition, variations in health outcomes and mortality rates among women of different racial and ethnic backgrounds are well documented.
