High school completion rate has increased from 84% in 1980 to 92% in 2013.

  • However, 1 out of 12 students will not receive a high school diploma or an alternative credential (e.g., General Educational Development certificate).

In 2013, 66% of high school graduates enrolled in a college (either a 2 year or 4 year program) immediately after completing high school.

High school completion rates are improving with over 9 in 10 children completing high school or receiving a high school completion equivalent certificate. Although a majority of these children enroll in a college, there is a substantial percent who do not (44%). It is not clear from these data how many students actually complete a college education and receive a degree, nor is it clear how many high school graduates who do not enter college immediately after high school eventually enroll in a college.
